Your dream vacation to the “Pearl of the Indian Ocean” just became much more affordable. Starting on May 25, Sri Lanka officially removed visa fees for tourists arriving from more than 40 different nations.
Whether you want to relax on golden beaches, hike through lush green tea plantations, or go on an exciting wildlife safari, you can now enjoy up to 30 days in Sri Lanka without paying a single cent for your visa.
Which Countries Are Eligible for the Free Visa?
This exciting new fee waiver applies to travelers from across the globe. If you hold a passport from one of the qualifying nations, you will receive a 30-day tourist visa completely free of charge.
- European Nations:
Travelers from the UK, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Belgium, Austria, Czechia, Denmark, Finland, Norway, Poland, Sweden, Belarus, Russia, and Turkey can all take advantage of this offer. - Other Global Destinations:
The free visa list also includes visitors from the United States, China, Thailand, and Indonesia. They join travelers from Singapore, the Maldives, and the Seychelles, who already enjoyed visa-free travel to the island.
How to Claim Your Free Sri Lanka Visa
While the visa itself is now free, you cannot just arrive at the airport without paperwork.
You must still apply for your Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) online before you fly. The online system will process your application without charging the standard fee.
Note: This new rule began on May 25. If you applied and paid for your Sri Lanka ETA before this date, the government will not issue refunds for past payments.
Top Things to Do During Your 30-Day Stay
With your visa fees saved, you have more money to spend on unforgettable experiences. Here is how you can pack your itinerary:
Step Back in Time at UNESCO World Heritage Sites
History lovers will be amazed by Sri Lanka’s ancient roots. Make sure to visit the massive stupas in the Sacred City of Anuradhapura, climb the famous Lion Rock at the Ancient City of Sigiriya, and walk the charming colonial streets of the Old Town of Galle.
Hike the Famous Pekoe Trail
If you love nature and scenic walks, you cannot miss the Pekoe Trail. Opened in 2023, this 300-kilometer walking route winds through Sri Lanka’s stunning central highlands. It is the best way to see the country’s world-famous tea plantations and experience local village culture up close.
Experience World-Class Wildlife Safaris
You do not need to visit Africa to see incredible wildlife. Sri Lanka is home to massive herds of free-roaming elephants in Udawalawe National Park and boasts one of the highest leopard densities in the world at Yala National Park. If you visit the coast at the right time of year, you can even take a boat tour to go whale watching.
