The transport and media Minister Bandula Gunawardena has announced that a special luxury air-conditioned intercity train will ply from Colombo to Kandy every weekend commencing from the 1st of October. The duration of the journey would be two hours and forty-eight minutes. The train is scheduled to leave Colombo Fort station at 6.30 am after a few stops at Gampaha ( 7.04 am), Veyangoda ( 7.15 am) Peradeniya (9.03 am) Sarasavi Uyana ( 9.12 am) before reaching the Kandy destination at 9.18 am. The train is scheduled to leave Kandy at 4.50 pm and will reach Fort station at 7.40 pm.
This new railway journey is under the focus of “Future Plans for Railways and New Routes’. This was revealed by the Minister addressing the media at the Government Information Department. Passengers are able to book tickets forefront ahead of their travel plans. First Class tickets would be Rs 2000/ and Second Class would be Rs 1500/ one way only. The luxury train consists of airconditioned four first-class compartments with 44 seats each. While there are three second-class compartments with an identical number of seats. The facility to book tickets early before the date of travel.
It was also stated that another similar luxury train service from Fort railway station to Anuradhapura is to be commenced in due course.
